Arlington, a beautiful Greek Revival home in Birmingham, managed to survive Sherman’s march during the Civil War. The house provided an interesting dose of the area’s history and the gardens provided space for the kids to run. (Unfortunately, a mommy got stung by a fire ant in the making of this blog post.)

Okay. It’s actually called the Festhalle Market Platz, but let’s call it the farmer’s market in Cullman, AL. We bought delicious figs, grape tomatoes, peaches, and green beans. Great food and great people.

Alabama–Dreamland BBQ (Birmingham)

A friend of mine who grew up in Birmingham suggested Dreamland BBQ which has grown into a statewide chain. The original joint (in Tuscaloosa) became famous for its BBQ ribs, but the BBQ chicken and pork were delish, too.

Alabama–Ave Maria Grotto (Cullman)

Ave Maria Grotto turned out to be a gem during an impromptu pit-stop in Cullman, AL. Initially, we were looking for the farmer’s market, but we also spotted signs for this sculpture park, built by Brother Joseph Zoettl, which is home to 125 miniature recreations of worldwide shrines.
